10. F-14D Super Tomcat– Mach 2.34
Jika Anda pernah menonton Top Gun, Anda pasti melihat Tomcat, meskipun mungkin salah satu dari seri sebelumnya. Tomcat F-14D, dirancang oleh Grumman, jelas merupakan salah satu dari jenis pesawat militer tercepat.

Mampu mencapai kecepatan di 2,34 mach, pesawat itu dibuat untuk dapat menghancurkan pesawat musuh pada malam hari. Sementara banyak pesawat yang hanya diijinkan untuk terbang dalam cuaca yang layak, F-14D bisa terbang dan menghancurkan dalam semua jenis kondisi. Tidak hanya itu, selain dapat menyerang pada malam hari dan dalam cuaca yang tidak terlalu baik, pesawat ini juga mampu menembak sekaligus 6 target pada waktu yang sama. Tomcat juga bagus untuk mendeteksi pesawat musuh dari jarak 100 mil.
Penerbangan perdananya pada tanggal 23 November 1987 dari halaman Calverton Grumman dan prototipe akhir melakukan penerbangan pada tanggal 9 Februari 1990. Tomcat F-14D adalah seri terakhir dari seri F-14 F yang upgrade dengan perangkat lunak komputer yang jauh lebih handal dan canggih. Namun, Menteri Pertahanan Dick Cheney menganggap pesawat ini tidak cukup kompetitif untuk bersaing dengan teknologi modern saat ini dan membatalkan produksi F-14 tahun 2008.
Apa kabarnya sekarang?
Pada tanggal 10 Maret 2006, Tomcat F-14D pensiun dari dinasnya di Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat. Sebelumnya, pada tanggal 8 Februari 2006 ditandai sebagai tanggal terakhir pesawat ini digunakan ketika terlibat dalam pertempuran di Irak.
Pesawat ini dibangun sebanyak 712 unit, tapi kebanyakan daripadanya saat ini harus 'dihukum' dengan kejam. Tomcat yang masih utuh tanpa banyak kerusakan mekanis disimpan di Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Anda juga akan menemukan banyak model di berbagai lintasan udara dan ruang museum. Namun yang lainnya sengaja dihancurkan sehingga Iran dan negara-negara lain tidak akan mendapatkan akses ke sparepart pesawat ini (dilaporkan 20 unit F-14 di Iran yang masih operasional, dari total 44 unit seluruhnya).
Pada tahun 2007, 23 dari 165 Tomcat sengaja dihancurkan. Biaya penghancuran pesawat secara benar sekitar $ 900.000, ini setara dengan sekitar 42% dari biaya total pembuatan Super Tomcat F-14D!.
9. MiG-23 Flogger – Mach 2.35
MiG-23 Flogger dibangun untuk menggantikan MiG-21 Fishbed sebelumnya. Dibuat dengan mesin yang lebih kuat serta setelan sudut sayap menyapu yang mampu mengubah variabel seperti kecepatan, waktu lepas landas, dan waktu pendaratan.
Mereka yang pernah terbang bersama pesawat ini mengatakan bahwa Flogger adalah salah satu pesawat tempur terbaik yang pernah dibuat dan relatif mudah untuk diterbangkan.

8. Su-27 Flanker – Mach 2.35
Uni Soviet menciptakan Su-27 Flanker untuk menyaingi supremasi udara AS dengan F-15 Eagle dan F-16 Fighting Falcon-nya. Mampu terbang dengan kecepatan 2,35 mach, Flanker menjadi pesawat tempur paling tangguh pada masanya.

6. Su-24 Fencer – Mach 2.4
Su-24 Fencer adalah pesawat buatan Soviet yang awalnya dimaksudkan untuk menyaingi US F-111. Namun Fencer membuktikan bahwa ia jauh lebih baik, jauh lebih cepat, kecil, ringan, dan lebih kuat daripada F-111. Bahkan, Fencer sering disebut sebagi pesawat paling berbahaya yang pernah dimiliki Uni Soviet.
Keunggulan pesawat ini adalah bahwa ia mampu mencapai mach 2,4 pada ketinggian rendah, sementara tidak banyak pesawat yang mampu melakukannya. Dibutuhkan ketinggian tertentu untuk bisa terbang pada kecepatan supersonik. Fencer juga dilengkapi dengan rudal laser-designators yang mempunyai akurasi lebih baik. Teknologi ini bersama dengan radar membuat Fencer sangat kuat. Meskipun penerbangan perdananya pada 2 Juli 1967, secara resmi Fencer diperkenalkan pada militer tahun 1974.

Su-24 Fencers dibangun sebanyak 1.400 unit. Pesawat masih digunakan oleh AU Rusia serta Ukraina Air Force. Pesawat ini digunakan pada tahun 2008 selama konflik di Georgia. Selain kedua negara tersebut, tempat-tempat seperti Iran, Aljazair, Irak, Libya, Belarus, dan banyak negara lain masih menggunakan pesawat untuk militer mereka.
5. F-111 Aardvark – Mach 2.5
F-111 Aardvark mungkin paling dikenal dengan desain modul kokpit untuk dua awak yang dirancang lepas pada keadaan darurat. Pertama dirancang awal 1960-an oleh General Dynamics, F-111 Aardvark, meskipun mempunyai nama yang aneh, Aardvark adalah pembom strategis yang banyak digunakan pada waktu itu.
Pertama kali mengudara pada tanggal 21 Desember 1964 dan dibawa bergabung ke militer pada bulan Juli 1967. Selama Perang Vietnam, F-111 paling banyak digunakan, namun karena biaya operasional yang tinggi, pesawat ini perlahan dipensiunkan. Hari ini F-111 Aardvark tidak digunakan di Amerika Serikat. Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat berhenti menggunakan pesawat pada tahun 1998. Di AS, Anda akan menemukan F-111 dipamerkan di berbagai museum, termasuk California, Illinois, Texas, Alabama, New York, Ohio, New Mexico, dan banyak tempat lainnya. Pada tahun 1965 permintaan itu dibuat, hanya tujuh tahun kemudian pesawat itu sudah terbang untuk pertama kalinya dan bergabung ke militer pada tahun 1979.
McDonnell Douglas, sebuah perusahaan yang dikenal sebagai pembuat Boeing, membuat pesawat yang memiliki sayap besar dengan kelincahan yang luar biasa untuk ukuran pesawat sekitar 64 meter panjang dan bentang sayap 42 kaki itu. 3. MiG-31 Foxhound – Mach 2.83
Debut penerbangan pertama pada tanggal 16 September 1975, MiG-31 Foxhound dibuat untuk menggantikan MiG-25. Tugasnya mencegat pesawat asing dengan kecepatan tinggi serta menggagalkan rudal jelajah dan pesawat yang terbang rendah. Meskipun mirip dengan MiG-25, Foxhound mengalami perombakan besar. Pesawat dibuat lebih besar dari MiG-25. Memiliki kemampuan untuk terbang dengan kecepatan supersonik, bahkan di ketinggian rendah. Pesawat juga telah diberikan mesin baru dengan kapasitas besar serta sistem pelacakan radar canggih yang membuat Foxhound jauh lebih handal dan efisien dalam pekerjaannya.
Resmi masuk militer pada tahun 1983, Foxhound perlahan menggantikan penggunaan MiG-25. Sekitar 400-500 unit MiG-31 diciptakan untuk Rusia dan Uni Soviet.

Hari ini, Rusia, Kazakhstan, dan segera menyusul Suriah mengandalkan MiG-31. Rusia memiliki sekitar 286 unit yang digunakan untuk tujuan militer, dengan tambahan cadangan sebanyak 100 unit. Kazakhstan juga memiliki beberapa Foxhounds, tetapi banyak yang tidak beroperasi, tetapi negara ini berencana memperbaiki sekitar 10 unit yang akan digunakan Angkatan Udara mereka. 2. MiG-25R Foxbat-B – Mach 3.2
Pada tahun 1959, Uni Soviet memfokuskan diri pada penciptaan pesawat tempur yang bisa mencegat serta digunakan untuk kegiatan pengintaian sekaligus.
Seperti beberapa pesawat Rusia lainnya, pesawat ini diciptakan untuk menyaingi pesawat AS seperti Lockheed SR-71 serta North American XB-70. Pada bulan Maret 1964, MiG-25R Foxbat melakukan penerbangan perdana dan segera pada tahun 1969, undang-undang ditandatangani untuk memungkinkan pengujian pesawat dengan kemampuan pengintaian dan tes dilakukan tahun 1970.
Pada tahun 1972 desain penyempurnaan telah digunakan oleh Angkatan Udara Uni Soviet. Pesawat dilengkapi dengan sistem pengendalian kebakaran otomatis serta radar besar dengan sistem look-down dan shoot-down setelah tahun 1980 ketika semua MiG diperbarui.
MiG-25R Foxbat juga mampu membom stasioner menggunakan bom jatuh bebas dari ketinggian 65.000 ft sambil tetap terbang dengan kecepatan supersonik. Ada juga sistem terinstal yang memungkinkan pesawat untuk menjatuhkan 10 bom sekaligus!
Apa kabarnya sekarang?
Berbagai negara di seluruh dunia masih menggunakan MiG-25R. Tempat-tempat seperti Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Suriah, Turkmenistan, Iran, dan Aljazair semua punya akses ke pesawat. Tentu saja, Rusia sebagai pengrajin utama pesawat tetap terus menggunakannya. Sekitar unit 39 unit MiG-25 telah dibangun. Sementara beberapa masih diterbangkan, yang lain telah dimuseumkan, termasuk yang berada di Museum Nasional Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat di Dayton, Ohio.
1. SR-71 Blackbird – Mach 3.2+
Meskipun pertama kali diperkenalkan pada 1966, SR-71 Blackbird masih dinobatkan sebagai pesawat berawak pengintai tercepat hingga empat dekade kemudian. Diproduksi oleh Lockheed, SR-71 ini dirancang oleh Clarence "Kelly" Johnson eorang tokoh penting dalam sejarah penerbangan.
Memulai debutnya pada tanggal 22 Desember 1964, dan memulai karir di militer pada Januari 1966. SR-71 mampu terbang dengan kecepatan mach 3,2 bahkan lebih. SR-71 adalah pesawat pengintai U-2 yang sangat rentan bagi pertahanan udara Soviet karena kecepatan dan kemampuan terbangnya yang lebih tinggi dan dilengkapi dengan kemampuan untuk melarikan diri.
Faktanya, pesawat ini tidak pernah jatuh oleh musuh, 12 unit dari 32 unit yang pernah dibuat hancur dalam kecelakaan. Pesawat dicat dengan cat teknologi baru yang memungkinkan sulit dilacak radar. Bentuk keseluruhan pesawat juga menjadi salah satu pesawat stealth teknologi pertama.

Hari ini Anda tidak akan menemukan SR-71 terbang di antara awan. Sebaliknya, Anda hanya akan menemukannya di museum, atau jika Anda bekerja untuk Lockheed di Palmdale, Anda akan menemukan tiga dari mereka dikunci di gudang hanggar mereka.
SR-71 itu secara permanen pensiun pada tahun 1998 ketika Kongres dan Angkatan Udara AS memutuskan pesawat ini sangat mahal untuk pemeliharaan dan biaya operasionalnya. Meskipun pensiun untuk pertama kalinya pada tahun 1991, Kongres memutuskan mengaktifkan kembali armada kecil untuk digunakan selama Perang Dingin. Upgrade mengagumkan untuk pesawat, seperti sistem radar canggih dan link data yang dapat mengirim gambar secara real time, SR-71 tetap di'hanggar'kan pada tahun 1998 untuk selamanya.
